This memoir of life under the genocidal Khmer Rouge reminds us of the cruelty of the human race. Our narrator recalls his horrific experiences as a teen, when he was separated from his family and forced into slave labor, on the brink of starvation and fearing death by his cruel captors. His traumatic struggle then continued as a homeless refugee at the mercy of Thai soldiers and navigating through landmines.
The book is obviously difficult to read due to the content. The pacing was a bit erratic & the transitions were a little disorienting, such that at times it wasn’t clear as to what was happening. Similarly, I often found it hard to visualize what was being described. But I am pleased to have read it and would recommend it to anyone interested in learning about such atrocities, particularly this one in Cambodia.
I was provided with an ARC (thanks to the author & publisher!) and I am voluntarily posting my honest review.
