Just when you think the suffering can't get any worse, the naga grows another head. In the biography of Mae Bunseng Taing, writen by his son James Taing it is unbelievable the amount of suffering him and his family go thru to get to freedom from the Khmer Rouge. Any evil situation a human could be placed in, they are put in over and over again: starvation, beatings, traveling under questionable conditions and weather: all in the name of securing a better future. James, the subject's son, felt the responsibility to tell his dad's story. From the very beginning, the very moment the soldiers arrive in his village, Mae could feel that something was not right, that life as he knew it was over. He could not have been more right.
In Under the Naga Tail, Mae and his family go thru cruel and unusual hardships as they travel across their country to get to freedom and lose members and regain some along the way. With Khmer Rouge as the villain forever lurking in the background, they go through such hardships no human should have to experience but they triumph in the end. I'm sure James did not realize it would be so hard for his dad to re-tell his story, but it was worth it. Over all, both thought each one would give up: James thought his dad would think it was too traumatic to go on and Mae thought because his son had never lived that life that it would be too much for him. They both did what they had to do for each other and gave us a magnificent story. To them i say thank you.
