This is a beautifully written memoir with first hand account of the Cambodian genocide. I first picked this book up because of the intriguing cover and story telling writing and I got so much more. It was very difficult to read at times just due to the difficult nature of the subject matter, but Mae and his family (and thousands of others) actually lived it. I was just inspired by the courage and bravery of the people suffering under the Khmer Rouge. I can’t believe this was not something highlighted in school considering it being fairly recent history. The writing is so well done and works well laid out in three parts. The maps were very helpful and a great addition. The most touching part was the inclusion of the family photographs and young Mae himself. A very bittersweet story with difficult content, but so beautifully written and important to world history. I would definitely recommend this book. I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a free copy, thank you Bookish first.
