Wow, this was a heavy book. It was brilliantly written, but it took me a little bit to get through because it was so emotionally heartbreaking. I can't believe that these events really happened, but this book was an eye-opener.

Mae survives a lot of trauma in Cambodia in the 1970s, and I would have immediately loved this character (the character of the real human behind the words) simply because of the terrible things he had to endure. However, Mae is able to find the good in the small things and points out the small kindnesses from strangers, which made me appreciate Mae even more. I cannot imagine going through these events or being able to put them on paper to share with the world.

Thank you so much for sending me a copy of this book to read and review. It was such an eye-opener, even if it was such a heavy read and I need a light book now to ease my heart.
