This was a very enlightening but sad book to read.

The book follows Mae Taing who is dealing with a lot of uncertainty once the Khmer Rouge came in and took over. There are no words for the cruelty and violence he witnessed and also got for trying to escape. It wasn’t just him who was trying to escape either. He had a lot of family and to move so many people was rough but they tried their best through every single hurdle thrown at them. It’s so hard to imagine having land, animals, and a shop to having nothing and everything belonging to one person.

As an American, I have been privileged. I have not had to deal with wars or genocide while living in my own country. Although there are some that have happened in our history. This gave me a new perspective as well as another book I had read recently in the same time space in Vietnam. It was interesting to see the similarities in which the citizens were treated and the laws that were enacted.

I’m glad that he was able to evacuate eventually and be able to tell his story along with many in his family. It was a very emotional read and one that will stick with me.
