This story was a heartbreaking and touching one. Even after reading this story, I cannot imagine what it must feel like to have my entire country and way of life ripped out from underneath me. There is no way that I believe I would have the will to continue on with my life as it would end up becoming. I would do it because I have to, but I do not know that there is any way that I would enjoy my newfound life.
This is a part of history I knew little to nothing about until I picked up this book. I liked how this book read like a novel rather than just a retelling of history; it really helped me finish this book. It was definitely a hard read though. Mae Bunseng Taing and his family went through so much more than many people go through in a lifetime.
I cannot believe that anyone would treat other people with such little humanity and little regard for them even as creatures. Animals appeared to be treated with more respect than humans. It was truly heartbreaking with every page I turned.
