This seems like a smart coming-of-age novel. Adanna's brother, Sam, left and Adanna is all that is left to uphold the family name and expectations. Talk about pressure! I like Adanna, she has a good head on her shoulders. But when is it too much? I don't believe that a kid needs to live for their parents. A kid needs to live for themselves. Parents cannot use their children to make up for their past mistakes or to get ahead. I understand this is a completely different culture than mine but to put those kinds of expectations on your children, who had no choice but to be born where the parents are living. I understand that immigrant parents want more for their children which is why the moved to another country but you still have to let your children find their own path. I enjoyed Adanna's journey in this novel and I look forward to more books from this author.
