This book does a good job of clarifying that in some cases the positive affirmations and encouragement of loving parents just is not going to be enough to overcome racial roadblocks. Some of the statistics to are sobering, from statistics for candidates with “white-sounding names” getting more call backs and University of Oxford statistics “found applicants from minority ethnic backgrounds had to send 80% more applications to get a positive response”. In addition, this book points out that some American Black politicians and other famous Black people create the “illusion of inclusion.” The book claims that it will be the perfect guide to help under-represented candidates to elevate achievements to the next level. I wish that the sample pages had included something beyond the pep-talk preface because I hesitate to categorize a book too much one way or the other (good or weak) based on the preface. I feel that there are enough statistics in the preface to indicate that the author has done some research.
