“Try as you might, it’s the one thing this city can’t bury. Truth.”

What a great kick off to a story that’s sure to impress, with a focus on hope and moving up from what live gives you. Going into this excerpt I didn’t know much about the plot, but was excited to read Gil’s story and think this book will be important, especially for young adult males who feel the weight of family expectations and the desire to get that one chance.

The book starts with a celebration of his Caribbean culture and I thought it quickly gave us as the reader an idea of who he is and where he comes from that I found easy to be interested in. We soon meet his friends and family, and find out why him attending the fancy Augustin Prep is so important to him, his desire to excel in STEM to increase his chances of a better future to provide for his family.
