I’m hooked after reading this first look! Trace of Evil is a murder mystery set in rural upstate New York. Main character Natalie is a detective with a backstory: her older sister, Willow, was murdered 20 years ago. The novel opens with Natalie visiting her sister’s grave on Willow’s deathiversary. She then meets colleagues for drinks at a bar and ends up driving a drunk friend home. They end up finding the friend’s wife murdered.
