This is the story about settlers who came to promised land in 1609. Although this book is historical fiction, many details are accurate and based on findings.
Young girl, who lost her family, comes here to serve her mistress in hopes to find a better life, since there's no place for her to come back to.
Still too young to marry, uneducated and naive.
Unfortunately every day becomes darker, monotony of it: stand in line for daily grains to make a meal out of, get water, water plants, do laundry.. next day same as before, only more dangerous.
She picks up a habit of pinching her arm, pulling her hair. It is not explained why she does it, in my opinion, there might be few reasons: since she's still so young, it's like biting nails or it's from all stress, not understanding fully what's happening, cruel master or hair are falling out from lack of nutrition. There's also forbidden love. While it's unacceptable to become friends with different ranks, I don't think crush between two girls was necessary in this book (considering timing that was unthinkable). I understand author wanted to show how important and lovable Jane was, but being close friends instead would give a pretty much same feeling of it and wickedness.
Book is pretty heavy and not sure if 14 year old would enjoy it, but I really did. For those who know this part of history, this book is a wonderful addition to learn a little more.
