This book was a rollercoaster. I was intrigued by the premise and first look so I requested it. Jumped in, and found it to be sadly bland for about the first 40 pages or so and I DNF’d with the intent to come back later when I was feeling more in the mood for it. Fast forward quite a while and I came back, re-read the beginning and was completely hooked. It picks up hugely after the seemingly banal start and becomes creative, shocking, visceral, and intriguing. I wasn’t sure what to expect as I’ve read lots of varying opinions on Paolini’s previous work but this book is so well-written and unique.

As someone who doesn’t read/watch a lot of sci-fi, the broader story of To Sleep In A Sea of Stars has a more universal appeal and can get almost stressful (in a good way) to read. There is body horror as a serious content warning, but if you can contend with that this is a book well worth trying if you’re willing to let it settle for a larger than average number of pages (maybe 100?) It’s a door knocker but worth the investment.
