I received a complimentary audiobook copy of TO SLEEP IN A SEA OF STARS by Christopher Paolini for an honest review. Thank you to Macmillan Audio and Libro FM for the chance to read and review!

TO SLEEP IN A SEA OF STARS follows Kira, a scientist exploring a new planet. While exploring some unusual elements, Kira stumbles into something she doesn’t understand, something alien that will impact the rest of her life. As the ramifications of her exposure are explored with her crew with some disastrous consequences, the fate of humanity is elsewhere in question. Kira finds herself caught up in the middle of a war between humans and aliens, in the unique position of being the only human who may be able to bring about peace.

There was a lot about this book that I enjoyed. I liked exploring the new race of aliens and even at times getting some of their perspective. We also get a variety of human settings and groups from new religious orders, the official military and the scrappy folks just trying to make ends meet. The story itself was entertaining, but I will say that it at times felt a bit long and like the story maybe could have been told in less pages. At nearly 900 pages this was a daunting read to begin.

I enjoyed following Kira’s journey from her first discovery of the artifact to her exploration of its impact on her life. I did want a bit more emotional depth from her, however. She goes through some pretty traumatic circumstances and I wanted to feel a bit more emotional impact from that.

The narrator is amazing! As more and more characters are introduced, I began to wonder at the decision to have only a single narrator, but she handled each and every character well to keep voices distinct and the reader clear on the players in the scene!

Overall this was a fun read and a great companion to my audiobook and beading sessions!
