Kira and Alan are on a space exploration mission together. They are trying to get assigned together for their next mission and have a plan. Kira is given one seemingly quick assignment the morning they are closing down their mission. Something unexpected happens and tis is where the First Impression ends.
I remember reading Paolini's Eragon series when they first came out and falling into the story. While the setting is very different (space opera!) the feeling is the same. I want to keep reading to see what will happen next. Is Kira okay? Will she still be with Alan? Will she ever see her family again? What happened?? Great beginning world building with a sense of suspense!
