It feels like the author took what he believed to be an easy route to gaining the reader's buy-in by introducing a love story in the first few pages of the book. Unfortunately, that is the easiest way to turn me off, so I was continuing to read in spite of that rather than because of it. There wasn't much to go on outside of that. A few characters were cursorily introduced and it's clear that they're on an alien planet even though the entire group seems to be human and very much like people from Earth. So the only moment that things got interesting was at the very end of the sample, and even that left me without feeling.
