I had never heard of the Author M.J. Rose, but since reading this book, I will definitely read more of her work. She has a talent for telling a story and getting you hooked from the beginning. Her descriptions of different places in the book were written so you can actually almost see what the characters are seeing, although I think there was a little too much description of Lauelton Hall when the main character Jenny gets there.

The story takes place In New York in 1924. The main character Jenny Bell is a talented 24 year old artist who is trying to keep her past buried. She goes to new York to attend The League (art school). There her teachers always question her about why her painting are always in blacks and greys. That answer is revealed as the story progresses. As you learn about Jenny's past your heart breaks for her. Jenny meets a very well off artist named Minx. The two are completely opposite, Minx is out going and loves to party and Jenny is reserved, careful and suspicious about everything, but they are like sisters. Minx enters both her and Jenny's work to the Tiffany Foundation, which allows artists to study at Laurelton, Mr. Tiffany's home. They are chosen, along with one other art student from the League, Edward, to take part in a session. While there, Things begin to happen. Someone seems to know about her past, but who? Is it Oliver, Mr. Tiffany's Grandson, who she is drawn to? Minx? Edward or is it someone else? Who is trying to revel her past and ruin her future? This book brings out many emotions as you read it. Sadness, happiness and anger are just a few that it brought out in me. This book will keep you reading to the end. Each chapter brings with it a new mystery or revelation about the mysterious Jenny Bell.
