They say a picture paints a thousand words, but MJ Rose paints a thousand pictures with her words as you read this book. Her writing is so descriptive, but never wordy or forced. You can picture every scene, every outfit the ladies wear, and so much more as you read this story. It is only fitting that the cover starts that feeling off with the gorgeous setting on the cover!
I loved the characters in this story, except for Edward, who was a jerk. They are all well-developed and people who you feel you would truly like if you were to meet them in real life. The author vividly portrays the wealth and luxury of the 20s for those in the high society realm, but not with any judgment or by making them seem shallow. In fact, Minx, Oliver and Mr. Tiffany are all generous and giving, not self-centered or stuck-up.
Jenny's story is heartbreaking, but I love that none of the scenes with the horrors that she endured are overly descriptive. With the way this writer paints such vivid pictures, those are scenes where I'm thankful she chose to be more sparse with her words.
I don't know if the author wants Edward's role in the story to be a mystery or secret - I was able to figure out who he was about halfway through the story. What I didn't know until the end what his motivation.
I was disappointed by the stand taken by Mr. Tiffany at the end - it is sad when people place economic success and family duty ahead of personal fulfillment. And doubly sad when that choice is made for one person by another. But thankfully the ending shows that things may have a chance of ending on a better note going forward.
