This is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone is a very descriptive, unique and beautifully written story about two rival time travelers — Red and Blue — who end up falling in love through the letters they exchange (oftentimes in very discrete and creative ways). The characters were well developed through their narrative and the storyline was interesting but I felt that the novel was lacking in some ways.

Throughout the book I was curious about their backgrounds, Red and Blue’s history, the details of the worlds and the factions each was fighting for and ultimately why they were at war. I would have liked some more “meat” to the story even though I suspect that was not the intention of the authors. The ending was good and left me more satisfied with the story. Overall I give it 3.5 out of 5 stars.
