It's nothing groundbreaking. Prep school drama and mystery are a common idea now, with many books and series that fall into the category, both for the YA and adult crowds. There are good reasons for this, as skewering the lies and darkness in the underbelly of the upper class is not only fascinating but cathartic. The downside, though, is that this particular story is consequently being released to float in a veritable sea of similar narratives. There is really nothing so far that sets it drastically apart from the prep school mysteries that have been coming out since I was in high school. Rich girl dies, friend group keeps secrets, people lie to maintain appearances. Between We Were Liars, Luckiest Girl Alive, and a few other novels, this sort of caste-system drama is not something I am seeking out anymore. But for what it is, it is very well done. The plot is more intriguing than other books I have read blurbs or excerpts from, and the author is very talented in her ability to describe things and convey mood while also propelling the story. If I hadn't already read and seen similar stories I would easily pick it up and devour it. I think it is a good book and for someone who hasn't been immersed in the trope for a while already, or for someone who loves the trope and never tires of it, this is probably an ideal selection. It's not something I personally want to go out of my way to read anytime soon, but that doesn't mean it isn't good or worth your time.
