I feel like the "murder at a prestigious prep school" trope has been done, but I am always interested to see if a book can put a different spin on it. In this case, the answer is no. The prep school has this popular group of kids called the Players. It's basically a sorority/fraternity for high school kids that only eight freshmen are asked to join and then enjoy their status for the remainder of their high school days. When they become seniors, they get to pick the freshmen to continue the tradition. This is complete with "pops" which are basically initiation challenges.

One of the Players gets killed her freshman year and another Player is arrested for the crime. Suddenly, that other Player wants a re-trial because he's not guilty. It was clear from the beginning who the real killer was, which was kind of a drag reading this. It's odd that no one else figured it out in the book when it was pretty glaring. I also had a hard time relating to or liking Jill Newman, the main character. Reading YA is usually interesting to me, but Jill made a lot of odd decisions and I couldn't ever really understand her train of thought. She was blindly in love with Adam, who never loved her back and reading about both of them was annoying at times.
