They Wish They Were Us by Rachel Goodman was a great young adult murder mystery. She depicts the group of students who run the school, The Players, in a relatable way and portrays the struggles of high school very well. I often feel that murder mysteries don't have enough characters to create a compelling mystery, but Goodman truly finds the balance between having just enough characters to keep you guessing and developing each character sufficiently. She also is very good at misleading her readers, and not making the killer obvious from the start. About halfway through the book, I thought I had figured out the rest of the story and was pretty disappointed, but as I started approaching the end, I realized I was wrong. I love an author who can convince me I've figured it out, but then still throw me for a loop in the end. Overall, I really enjoyed reading this book from Rachel Goodman and I would be excited to read anything she chooses to publish next.
