Jill Newman is starting her senior year at Gold Coast Prep, one of the most prestigious private schools in the country and located on Long Island, New York. Jill has been looking forward to being part of the school's "elite class," but first she and her friends must sit through the memorial assembly for their deceased friend, Shaila Arnold, who was killed by her boyfriend and fellow classmate, Graham Calloway, during their freshman year. It seems that life at school will be perfect for Jill, until she receives a message that claims that Graham is innocent. Now, what is she supposed to do now?

This YA novel jumps start into the reality of teens and their parents. First, the Prologue and the first chapter lets readers know that Shaila wasn't a "good person" and that her memorial service has been "glamorized" by her parents and the school's headmaster. Yet, the story continues with the protagonist and her classmates a false sense of security that Shaila's memorial will be the last they'll hear of her as they fill college applications and go to house parties.

When Jill receives a message from Graham's sister, Rachel, saying that her brother is innocent and she wants to talk to her, Jill wonders whether or not this will be the first of many road bumps in what's supposed to be her "perfect school year."

The book's cover seems to reflect what Shaila is supposed to represent to her friends. Based on how Jill remembers her friendship with Shaila, it seems that the cover is spot on.
