This is where I wish we could do half stars as well. This is 3.5 stars for me. It was so close to 4 stars, I can definitely say that I couldn’t put it down. And That usually means a book is 4 starts for me. But I can’t quite call it 4 stars because I found the ending frustrating. I can’t explain why without potentially spoiling the storyline and I absolutely do not want to do that :)

The suspense and mystery is definitely consistent through the entire book.

Stella and Ellie live in a town that was once nicknamed Deadwood because of a string of unsolved murders. Every one of the victims was a runner. This took place about 10 years ago.

Stella is the best runner at her school and Ellie is next.
Stella has spent the summer away after an incident at a race where another runner got hurt. She might have lost her dream of going to Georgetown.

Both Stella and Ellie know that their parents can only afford college for one of them. One of the girls has to get a scholarship. This puts so much pressure on their success in track.

Neither girl has many friends, Stella never opens up to anyone after spending her earliest years as Ellie’s protector. Ellie’s best friend moved away the previous year.

When Mila comes to their school and joins the track team, both girls connect with her. Ellie even tells her the biggest secret she’s keeping.

When Mila turns up missing, everyone seems to want to pin the crime on Stella.

There’s a lot of other layers to this story too. There’s family dramas, relationship dramas, there’s even a big emphasis on the idea that all of the girls’ deaths only serve to hold back the women who dream of running and not the men. There’s definitely something here about women being held to a different standard than men (on several levels in this story).

I’m really so close to rounding up because of how much I enjoyed the majority of this book. But I’m disappointed with his it wrapped up. Maybe it felt like we needed more of an impact at the end of so much suspense through this whole book, I think that’s probably what it was for me.

I got to read an early edition of this book from BookishFirst. I enjoyed it a lot and I’ll definitely continue to read this author’s books.
