Keeping secrets is never a good start to any relationship or any way to build a lasting one. So, when we read that Cameron has had a clandestine relationship with Karla, a girl he has very little in common with, being in two different worlds at their high school, this all spells recipe for disaster! High school is the one place where most people never feel quite right around people they don't know and even around most people they call their friends. So, when you have a relationship hidden from everyone else in your life as Cameron does, readers will most likely find him heartbroken by the end of the story.
But, with the introduction of Mackenzie to Cameron's life, a genuine person who tells her true intentions and thoughts, readers are given hope that, in the end, Cameron will not be utterly destroyed by whatever disaster awaits him from the summer fling that didn't end. We can only hope he has a better head on his shoulders than whatever part talked him into dating Karla in the first place.
From the cover we can only surmise that Cameron is of two selves with the girls and how can that be possible when we only have our one, true self? Which part of Cameron is the real boy he truly is, the boy that will one day be a man?
This sounds like a coming of age story no reader will want to miss, YA or otherwise. A story about searching out the things that are important in life in the people that surround you. About finding out that something you think you desire may not be what you really need and, in the end, want.
