2.5 stars rounded up to 3. The first 100 pages go through the motions of acclimating two girls who have never hiked before to a forest. Nothing interesting happens besides them releasing years’ worth of pent-up frustrations at each other. The beginning dragged and by the time the interesting climax came into play, no character development had occurred, the “villains” had no motive other than being antagonists, and the whole action of the climax lasted barely ~25 pages. I expected something more than just two men without motive other than small flashbacks to their terrible upbringing. One of the girls undergoes extreme injuries and the whole ordeal seems brushed over in a few sentences. I really wanted to like this book, but I never found myself connecting with either main character or feeling immersed in the story and setting.
