The Wives is an impactful memoir about the life of an Army wife. The author details the moment her now husband told her he wanted to join the army and how that decision affected their lives. It's more than a book that only people in the Army will connect with because at the heart of the story is connection; connection with your spouse, friends, and community.

I am not gonna lie, I enjoyed reading this book more than I thought I would. I wasn't sure how I would connect with this book since I am not an Army wife, but it was written so well focusing more on love, friendship, and making marriage work. Simone and Andrew fell in love and got married pretty quickly...after he decided to join the Army. Sometimes you hear, 'They know what they signed up for' and that may be true but it made you realize that just because you know something doesn't mean you will ever fully be prepared mentally and physically. Simone's writing helps you see the struggles of being an army wife. I can't even imagine the stress and anxiety they and their spouses have to endure. Not only did she worry and hope her husband would come home safely, but in the process she felt like she lost herself. Who was she if she wasn't an army wife?

She wasn't afraid to tell her story with all the ups and downs. What I think the book showed was how important communication is. It could be with your spouse, fellow army wives, community, and all the bonds you make in between. I appreciated how Simone and Andrew continued to work on their marriage. They sought counseling because they knew they wanted to be together forever and wanted to fix/address problems before they got to a place where they couldn't come back from. I also enjoyed the friendships she made along the way with fellow army wives. That appears to be a bond that you can't break. It was so amazing to see how they all came through for each other when they needed it most.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book and felt all the emotions as I was reading. I have a greater appreciation for army wives and everything they go through because they fell in love..
