The introduction to the book says 'assume nothing'. This phrase led me to want to read more. This started off by the plot about a jilted wife and her younger and prettier replacement. Yet when the plot proceeds, there are indications of a lot more, including secrets and insecurities in the backgrounds of the three main characters.
