What drew me instantly to this book was the simple statement of: "assume nothing". To me, a good book surprises and messes with my mind, and I can't resist a book that promises just that! It is difficult to judge whether the book will deliver the promise or not, but the authors do a good job setting the scene: first of all, it starts with a sinister prologue, which promises that something bad is going to happen. We then get introduced to the characters: young, sweet and innocent Nellie, who is vulnerable due to some traumatic incident in her past; sad and bitter Vanessa, who can't get over her husband leaving her and getting engaged to his younger girlfriend; and Richard, who to me sounds like a bit of a sleaze. I am already forming first impressions, which is obviously what the authors have intended with their "assume nothing" statement, so am hoping they will prove me wrong! I loved the one statement Vanessa makes about herself: "I’d entered the marriage with nothing. I hadn’t worked. I hadn’t borne him children. I’d been deceitful." Mmh, interesting! Deceitful how? Maybe there is more to this story than we are being shown. I am hoping for some unreliable narrators and unexpected twists to come. For now, I am sitting on the fence, but I am definitely intrigued and would pick up this book in a heartbeat to read more.
