In this book, we meet Cora Gundersun, a mild-mannered retired school teacher from small town Minnesota who suffers from migraines (or so she thinks...) until one day the "spiders in her brain" command her to blow up a hotel killing herself and scores of others including the governor and a congressman. But Jane Hawk, a FBI former agent, now fugitive, knows better. She joins forces with Sheriff Luther Tillman from Cora's town and both arrive in Iron Furnace, Kentucky, an idyllic community controlled by the secret society leader, D.J. Michael and they free the children....and then they are on the run again. Jane is determined to take D. J. Michael down but he commits suicide and thus, we are left to wait for book #3......The Crooked Staircase.
