Let me just say that Dean Koontz is an incredible author. The descriptions of people and places is almost poetic. He makes it all seem so real you can easily picture it all in your mind, like a movie.
Now for the story. This is a continuation of the first book. Jane Hawk is after the people who are behind her husbands death. While doing this she discovers a town whose population has been adjusted. She also discovers children who for all intents and purposes are being held captive there. They are planning an escape and with a little help succeed. We travel with Jane from one coast to the other with a couple of stops along the way. Jane also finds help in different and surprising places. This book keeps you reading, wondering how Jane is going to accomplish her mission.
