It is the continuation of a tragedy…The Silent Corner. Rouge FBI agent, Jane Hawk’s, tragedy. Her son…in hiding. Her husband…dead. A victim of technology wired to kill. Not homicidal robots in some futuristic society. Not the manifestation of Detective Spooner’s worse nightmare. (Only “I’Robot” fans will know what this means ☺️). Instead the “bug” is internal and able to control the mind and decision making of victims. What will Jane Hawk do to avenge her husband, protect her son, and save others deemed a threat to the facade of civilization and as a result marked for death? What else, but…Kick-ass?

When I first began reading “The Whispering Room” I immediately knew that author Dean Koontz was one not only to admire, but also to learn from. His talent for colorful yet simplistic explanation created many moments where I found myself hunched over my Kindle furiously highlighting and taking notes where the writing “The Whispering Room” was so eloquent I just had to make sure I knew where to find the line or sentence again in the future and so that I could apply the word structure to my own writings. Writing this masterful makes a writer like myself feel inspired while reading and like I have gained my own personal writing workshop example guide right at my fingertips! Mr. Koontz’s flare for literature is just one reason to read this book the other is Jane Hawk…and her thrilling fight against nanotechnology and mind control devices unleashed on the world by corrupt men in high places. Jane is shown to be resourceful and courageous as she maneuvers her way into the presence of her crooked targets using every possible avenue. In one of her many disguises to stay under the radar of the FBI – who is relentlessly searching for her in hopes of silencing her fight – she is main source of the story’s action all the while maintaining her resolve even as the details of each nanotechnology assisted murder/suicide creep their way further into the realm of disturbing and unsettling…because she has a grand plan.

….And an unlikely ally.

Introducing Sheriff Luther Tillman (if you need an image of this tall, broad shouldered, brooding, black male crime fighter just think of Idris Elba in the BBC television series, “Luther” 😏) who grows increasingly suspicious of the motives behind a fiery, catastrophic mass murder and suicide in his own jurisdiction when he is essentially cock-blocked from investing the crime and the culprit of the crime by the FBI. He finds himself awake in the mist of resting hours mulling over the secrets of the government and for what reason they decided to burn down a house full of evidence. In addition to that, Luther meditates over the salvaged journals of mind controlled Cora the only clue to her growing instability that survived the fire. What he does not know (at first) is that he is squinting at what is only the tip of the iceberg.

This book maintains a steady pace from beginning to end with action packed moments. It will leave you with a haunting feeling that someone in a high place may just be watching your every move…plotting when to inject you with the secret serum to take over your mind and eliminate you in the name of the stability of society built on secrets.

If you find yourself regularly anxious or paranoid about the hidden activities and mysteries of the government you probably should not read this book. Honestly, you may never sleep again….as Mr. Koontz writes in Part III of “The Whispering Room”…… “Paranoia could be a tool for survival. It could also be an engine of unreason and lethal panic.”

For the rest of us who are only consciously weary about the shadiness of the government I would totally, utterly recommend this book!

For book lovers who seek out Mysteries, Thrillers, and Action stories I would totally, utterly recommend this book!

For writers who are looking to strengthen their writing skills and descriptive paragraph clarity and eloquence I beg of you forget (just for 528 pages) whatever genre preferences or government paranoia you have and read this book.
