Dean Koontz never fails to deliver a story that not only grabs your interest but once absorbed, you realize time has stopped. After not reading one of Koontz's books for many years (not by choice but circumstance) I was not surprised that while reading, I was no longer aware of time, surroundings and was totally captivated to the point of shock when I reached the end of the excerpt provided. It was as though I was standing on a cliff, suddenly aware I was about to fall, metaphorically speaking.
I love the way he describes inanimate objects, take newspapers for example, he says "these days newspapers were as thin as anorexic teenagers." The descriptions are eye openers, true and funny. And his love of dogs always shows through "dogs sometimes regard their 'humans' with an expression of concern, colored with tender pity" because all dog owners know, our pets own us.
But these examples aren't why this book is so good, its the science fiction, realism, the conceivable ideas suggested that become the bait and I learn I've become hooked. Koontz is and has been the next H.G. Wells of our time. I want to finish this book!
