🚨 UNPOPULAR OPINION 🚨

This book was not for me. I found it completely and utterly boring. Everyone says this is a “slow burn” and I say that it’s more like watching sap drop from a tree horizontal tree branch.

Basically, there is this man (Tom) who is raising his son (Jake) after his wife (Rachel) dies. He has no bond with his son whatsoever and he lives in self-deprecation about it instead of attempting to build a relationship with his child. The two of them move to some town to get a “fresh start.”

They move to a town where a serial killer, The Whisper Man, was caught and put in jail for murdering a bunch of little boys.

One night, a new child, Neil, goes missing. The town is in a panic because the little boy goes missing in the same manner as the boys did back in the day with evil ‘ole Whisper Man.

The hunt is on. The same detective that put away a The Whisper Man before, along with a new female detective Amanda, are on the case. The catch: the detective (Pete) must talk to a The Whisper Man in jail to get his perspective on whether or not an accomplice or copy-cat is who they should be looking for. The Whisper Man will only speak to Pete (Oh hey, Silence of the Lambs, nice to see you here).

Meanwhile, back at Tom and Jake’s house, creepy things are happening (even alluding to supernatural elements). You wait an entire novel for the “creepy thing” to actually happen and when it does, it comes and goes fairly quickly.

In the end, some major twists come out (two of the twists are the same exact thing but with two different characters). And then everyone lives happily ever after (except for that one person! Sorry person! Your story arc had to unnecessarily end!)

The only reason I’m giving this book a 2 ⭐️ is because it does a good job with describing the grief process for Tom and Jake. And it also does a good job with not making the little boy, Jake, seem like a smart, observant, and intelligent child (something we are seeing a lot in within the thriller genre lately).

The MAJOR reasons I strongly disliked this book is that 1. It was boring as all hell 2. It was a police procedural that wanted to be a horror book and 3. I listened on audio and the narrator was ABSOLUTELY FREAKING TERRIBLE. I will actually never listen to him again, no matter what the book. He had NO inflection in his voice, his acting skills were nonexistent, and he seemed to give two shits about this book and the very pretty decent written prose. If I read a physical copy of this book, my review may have been a 3 ⭐️. But guess what: I didn’t.
