“If you leave a door half open, soon you’ll hear the whispers spoken.
If you play outside alone, soon you won’t be going home.
If your windows left unlatched, you’ll hear him tapping at the glass.
If you’re lonely, sad, and blue, the Whisper Man will come for you.”
― Alex North, The Whisper Man

Alrighy, let’s get into it. First off, this was the perfect spooky fall read. It had everything I love in a book- creepy murderer, children hearing voices, and a layered and interesting family dynamic. Many people have said The Whisper Man is more about the father/son relationship between Tom and Jake, but I think their relationship was an important part of the story.

The premise of The Whisper Man is that there is a serial killer on the loose, whispering at the window of little boys. He is caught and captured, but the whispering starts up again when a new child goes missing. The story follows Tom and his son Jake as they move to a new town to get away from a family trauma. Jake has been through a lot, and this results in him having an imaginary friend.

Once they get to the new house, Jake begins hearing new voices. He sleepwalks and asks his dad about “the boy in the floor”. Maybe I’m just a baby, but I started getting really creeped out in the best way during this book. Just the idea of a child talking to someone that no one could see gave me chills.

The story also talks about the cops on the case and what they have gone through in the past. It really is a story about family and relationships, and chronicles a cycle of fathers and sons. It was the perfect book to read in October and I think that Alex NorthAlex North hit it out of the park. I didn’t see the end coming and loved the very last page! I would definitely add North to my list of “buy any book they write” authors, and hope he comes out with another one soon!
