Saw this book so many times being reviewed on Instagram that I put it on hold at the library. It took a while to get and I thought there would be no way to get it read in the amount of time the library would allot me with other holds waiting. I got the book at the right time.

"If you leave a door half open, soon you'll hear the whispers spoken. If you play outside alone, soon you won't be going home...." This a rhyme that the kids in Featherbank repeat when kids disappeared 20 years earlier and it continues today. Tom (dad) and Jake (7 year old son) are new to the area, after Rebecca (their wife and mother) dies the guys move to a new house, the scary house in the neighborhood. A little boy disappears from the neighborhood after he hears someone whispering his name. Jake also hears whispering one night at his window. Several characters are involved with the case, both the present case of the boy disappearing and the cases 20 years ago. The town and the characters have dark pasts, the Whisper Man is waiting to exploit all of it.

This book was really good, though I thought I might not finish it about 100 pages into the story. I found Tom to be annoying, and the relationship between he and his son annoying also. Most of the characters in this book were damaged and and battling demons in some form. Sometimes characters that are dealing with things are written in a way that do not connect with me. Not sure what it is, something in my wiring🤨. Anyway, the rest of the book flew by, and was great. I would have liked a bit more scary bits in the book. My rating 4 ⭐️
