For a modern book, compared to other modern books, it's decent. But, as someone who grew up on horror - Things to Tremble By, More Things to Tremble By, Poe, Inner Sanctum, etc. etc. I really didn't see what the big deal was about this one. For me, it was not really engaging, I couldn't bring myself to care about the characters, and there was a lot of "this has been done before, but better." Younger readers may not find this to be the case, but honestly, this one didn't even register on my creepy scale. No sense of unease, no book gripped tightly beneath the covers. No nothing. Read it, moved on to the next one. Honestly, the little voice card that came with the ARC gave better creep than the book itself.

Reading this excerpt was my third, and final, attempt with this book (ARC, BOTM pick on accident and this). I'll give it this - it's pandemic reading. It's 'I couldn't care less what is happening, these characters aren't the slightest bit engaging but at least it's better than staring blankly at a tv' reading. It's "if it was in a little free library I guess I'd pick it up as a backup if there was absolutely nothing else" reading. It's monotone - zero engagement.
