I enjoyed but not as much as I had hoped I would

The author really nailed the eerie atmosphere. I read this book at night and was extremely creeped out. I love a book that makes me feel disturbed. Unfortunately, the story itself just didn’t do it for me. I was very engaged in the beginning but as the story began unfolding, I became apathetic about the plot. It was good but it just didn’t quite meet my expectations for what it could have been. I was hoping for more of a horror/thriller instead of a slow-burn suspense type novel. I also had some trouble connecting the characters with the exception of the son, Jake. I connected with him cared about his outcome. Plus, there is something extra spine-tingling about a kid hearing voices and drawing creepy drawings.
