I think maybe I have been reading too many thrillers lately because this one did not leave me feeling very creeped out or thrilled while reading. Instead I felt immensely sad for all the characters. I was definitely very invested in this story, I needed to know what happened and I needed to know who did it. I had to figure out who the villain was and I had to make it to the end. I really enjoyed a lot of the characters, mostly little Jake, but despite my interest, I also feel like the book read like a straight police procedural drama. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but that's not how this book was billed, nor how it was hyped. A lot of people raved about how tense and terrifying this was, to me it felt very cliched and rather basic. I didn't feel like there was enough thrill, enough tension, enough on the line. I feel like I was promised True Detective Season 1 and wound up with True Detective Season 2. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't 'wow'.
