I am giving this book 3.5 stars, but I could have just as easily given this a solid 3 or a solid 4 because there were many things that I found myself loving but other aspects that I disliked very much.

This is a tale when Alexa Monroe, the mayor’s chief of staff, meets pediatric surgeon Drew Nichols in a hotel elevator that has gotten stuck. Alexa is at the hotel to celebrate her sister Olivia’s recent partnership promotion at Palmer, Young & Stewart while Dr. Drew is there to attend a meeting scheduled by another doctor. Together , while the elevator is broken, they share crackers and cheese and discuss that Drew is attending a wedding this weekend that feels like a “triple whammy” of defeat. Not only is the bride his ex, the groom is his best friend from medical school but he is also a groomsman with a date that backed out the last minute. What a poor unfortunate guy, right? Wrong! Throughout the novel we find out that this seemingly perfect gentleman has quite a few quirks underneath that handsome exterior.

Once the elevator is operational again, Alexa realizes that she is quite stricken by Drew and agrees to attend both the rehearsal dinner and wedding with him as his date. Little does she know she will also assume the role as his “girlfriend” which will be a HUGE surprise to all.

With a little styling help from her best friend Maddie and her outgoing and adaptable personality she makes it through both events with ease. This begins the start of a tumultuous flirtationship/ relationship.

So... without giving too much away...let me tell you what I loved about this novel! The sexy scenes were fun and steamy, both of their jobs held very important roles and responsibilities for them to uphold. It wasn’t just a contemporary romance but definitely dove into some important issues as well, such as childhood illness, racial profiling, giving back to those in need and more. I also believe that this is the first inter-racial love story that I’ve read...I believe that there should be much more of this on the market to read and I am so there for today’s variety of coupling. The same old gets boring ....and this was Spicy!

What I didn’t like is this book’s repetitive nature regarding the food , the sex, and the derogatory comments about white women. First the food & sex— it literally seemed like every chapter they were either eating or making out and there wasn’t very much in between. They ate tacos two or maybe even three times, blueberry waffles, and ice cream and my gosh the donuts and cups of coffee both must have been discussed ten times each! Now as far as the negative comments it seemed to me like the only friends that Alexa could make were either Asian, Korean, or a strawberry blonde white girl because either the author or Alexa has something totally against white girls with blonde hair.

Comments such as the following really bugged me , Amy ( the bride’s sister tall, white, blonde) to Alexa “ I almost bought a dress like that for a wedding I went to last month , but I realized that I was just too skinny for it. So glad you can make a dress like that work.” Again, “ All three of them were in cocktail dresses shorter and tighter than anything she’d dare to wear because of her thighs and hips and butt. Their perky little breasts were obviously unencumbered by bras, and their long thin legs looked even longer and thinner cause of their sky-high heels. And there she was in between them , in the dress that her friends would have said made her look voluptuous...[which was just another] word for fat.” There are a LOT of comments like this throughout the book and they are coming from a character that is all about standing up for her race. Statements like these make her extremely unlikeable; she has serious insecurities. My question is where are all of the brunettes and redheads, not that it should matter, but every white girl isn’t blonde. Also I’m extremely curvy and have a large chest and butt and I have dirty blonde hair so I’m a bit offended. I also have girlfriends of color that are quite petite. We all come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes and I hope that these comments are truly coming from Alexa and not the author.

Also ~~ I really have to say that the level of maturity coming from both main characters are not of 30 year olds with professional jobs, but rather of teenagers in their first relationship. The games that they play and the way that they talk to one another is absurd! The arguments are petty and the silent treatment, really?

I’m not sure if I would read another book by this author or not, this one kind of left a bad taste in my mouth even though I really did like the storyline. I guess time will tell.
