The book is set in the present day in a secluded settlement called New Jerusalem. The leader, Daniel, proclaims that he's a prophet, with his direction coming straight from God. Over the years, he's gathered a larger group of followers willing to shut out the "Outside."
The story is told in alternating POVs: Miriam and Caleb. There's a nice mix of characters, and they're relatable, for the most part. The ending is nicely wrapped up, though it wasn't quite what I was expecting. The pacing is appropriate to keep the reader engaged. It gives them something to think about regarding the roles of men and women in today's society.
This is the author's debut, and it appears she'll have a bright future, if this book is any indication of what she does with her next books.
