Dry and detached writing

This started off very strong. I was getting big Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine vibes. The main character is grieving and lives detached from life. The only thing she cares about is her work and being able to do that with no distractions. This worked for me okay because it made sense with her grief.

And I also liked how the restructuring of her workplace with a new CEO forces her to look up from her work. The new CEO is also the complete opposite of her and is a huge ray of sunshine to her grump.

The problem is that they have this whirlwind romance that starts with her being curious about him. And she hasn’t felt curious about anyone in a long time. And then they start going on dates and have a relationship. But the dry detached writing is the same during this section of the book. It was a whole lot of telling instead of showing. I wasn’t sure why she liked it in the first place. Their relationship didn’t feel real at all. There was absolutely zero chemistry and intimacy. So when the author writes how our mc is happy, I didn’t feel it.

And then the last 1/3 we start to introduce this odd suspense over Mat and this “life coachy, professional development” group that helps in. You start to get thriller vibes and by that time, I couldn’t care enough. It tied to push through many times but in the end I DNFed the book.

I think this could work for some people if you like the writing. The workplace is interesting and we have quirky and fun side characters. But sadly that wasn’t enough to hold my attention.
