I won this book on BookishFirst, but due to my own fault, I hadn't updated my address after moving and never received it. That red bubble letting me know I had a book to review though nagged and nagged at me, so I checked it out on Overdrive. I'm SO glad I did.

From the first look/sneak peak we were privy to on BookishFirst.com I thought it sounded unique. I wasn't entirely sure what to make of it, but it was certainly a genre I hadn't read in a while and felt worth a chance in the raffle.

I'm here to tell you that first glimpse into this book you have access to doesn't begin to set the mood for the whole book. It took me through turns and emotions I was not expecting in the least bit.

This book is set in the future. A future that takes place on an almost entirely submerged Earth (I believe). The world agreed to try to warm up the poles for more land for our ever growing population, but their attempt worked too well and caused what Tempest (one of our main characters) refers to as The Great Wave. It almost entirely wiped out humanity and raised sea level higher than our brains can really even begin to comprehend. Now Tempest dives in Old World ruins which are buried cities and sky scrapers for anything of value. She lives on Equinox, a floating reef. Her life hasn't been easy. At 12 her parents died, presumably drowned in one of their boats during a night storm. At 15, her sister drowned too, leaving Tempest to fend for herself.

But now, she wants answers and in this world, you can get answers and closure in an unfathomable way. On Palindromena, a nearby island, you can resurrect your loved ones. The catch? Obviously, there are a few. First, it's only for 24 hours. Second, you pay an exorbitant fee (which is why it's taken her two years to save for this moment). And third, you get to have your loved one back for 24 hours, but they're 100% ignorant to the situation and cannot leave their resurrection room on the island during this time.

And Tempest has questions she needs answered from her sister, Elysea. A few months after Elysea drowned, her friend let it slip that Elysea was the reason for their parent's untimely death. But that's all Tempest knows. Her anger has pushed her for two years. It's powered her dives and her determination. It's been the reason she's kept living in all honesty.

But this is just the very beginning of this story. So many twists happen, escape, adventure, kidnapping, drama, it's hard to talk about this one in a concise way. I'll tell you, I recommend picking it up. It's a world entirely unlike our own and a perfect escape. It's got characters that deal with heavy subjects, like facing death. It grabbed me and drew me in and I ended up adoring the characters and the story.

Astrid Scholte's writing is excellent, she's capable of switching between narrators seamlessly and still capturing their own personalities and traits. And this is a unique plot, far different than anything I've read! So, enjoy, fellow readers!
