Oh look! It's another YA novel in which the main character, a female, has a "tragic" backstory and must...correct all the wrongs because only she can do it herself. *eyeroll*
You know, at least 90s YA was full of death and gore. This misplaced savior complex really just kills it all.
Here's my (admittedly sarcastic) notes taken while reading this excerpt:
-Oh look, we start with a heaping cup of initial whiny teen angst.
-Well, the dive idea's pretty neat, that's more than most modern YA have going for them.
-Oh, wait, nope, now we've got a reverse Ariel vibe going on. I feel like any moment now, around the corner we're going to get a "But Daddy, I love him" or some similar BS.
-And now it went weird again with the unrealistic body farm.
-You know, it really ticks me off that YA gets away with being able to take out all the science in their science fiction these days. Whatever happened to plausibility? Why is it no longer required in YA? I can't say for sure if it's the writers that are getting worse or the editors. Probably both.
