Vivid, eerie underwater descriptions set the perfect scene for the life Tempe lives, alone and without family, scraping to survive. Diving is a daily occurrence, searching for relics that will help pay for necessities and the Notes Tempe needs to resurrect her sister Elysea. Tempe wants answers about their parents' deaths and she knows Elysea can give her those answers.

As Tempe dives, she sees the rarest treasure, a plant. While she struggles to free the roots, her air depletes and the details of what she feels are vivid enough to make me take a deep breath!

Lor has lost her friend Calen and she feels truly alone. She blames herself for his death because she loved to climb high peaks on the island. He perished on one of their climbs. She works in the Aquarium, where bodies float, awaiting resurrection or to be used for scientific research. Lor surrounds herself with death because of the guilt she lives with. Her co-worker, Ray is a bright spot in her otherwise dreary existence.

I thoroughly enjoyed Four Dead Queens by Astrid Scholte. Her world building brings the story to life with brilliant detail and I and can't wait to finish reading Vanishing Deep.
