I have always liked John Hart’s prose. He writes so openly with a solid command of sentence structure and word usage. By his writing alone I can tell he is someone I’d like to meet. The characters have depth and struggles and life is not always fair for them, but they persist like most of us do. His characters are complex, sometimes haunted by their own demons. In this novel he introduces many multifaceted individuals, all of whom caught and maintained my interest throughout the entirety of the novel. Even the so called ‘bad guys’ have a story, and a context and through Hart’s telling the reader is able to sympathize to some degree with them. He explores themes of class, race, identity in a very graceful and approachable manner. At times his prose can weigh heavy but this mainly due to the very human challenges that his characters confront.
