For starters, I will start by saying that though this is historical fiction, it might not be for all readers who generally love historical fiction. As a teacher of students who love historical fiction, I was so certain they would love The Tubman Command, but unfortunately I was wrong (I unashamedly passed the book off to one of my students after reading it because they adore historical fiction). I chalk this up to the pacing that just doesn’t quite appeal to all junior high students. That being said, after reading this book myself, I was really impressed with the amount of research that went into creating the story, and I really loved how this book offers up a unique perspective to Harriet Tubman’s story that we very rarely hear about and that so many don’t even know! While the plot was a bit slower to build in the beginning (I’ll acknowledge that), the history was still so fascinating and the writing well done. I look forward to seeing this one on shelves in May!
