This is a story about Harriet Tubman, the former slave who lead other slaves north to freedom. The story takes place over a month in 1863. Harriet Tubman has gone south to work for the Union Army. They have the islands off the coast of South Carolina. She is working as a maker of gingerbread biscuits and root beer and sometimes a nurse at the Contraband hospital. It is hard to read that black men and women were called contraband as this still donates property. In this novel Harriet Tubman convinces the Union Army to go up the Combahee River to rescue slaves. 756 men, women, and children are rescued. Black and white soldiers fought together to make the nation believe all men could be free.

Cobbs uses snippets are source documents to start each chapter to make the novel feel real. Of course, one cannot make up dialogue and as a result this is very compelling history in the form of a fictitious narrative. No soldiers were lost on this mission, although a few slaves did not make it aboard the ships.
