I'm ashamed to admit that I did not know much about Harriet Tubman. In school, I think we spent 15 minutes hearing about her. The tragedies of her life that the author describes certainly humanizes this icon of American history, but does not diminish what she did in any way. Elizabeth Cobb has written an engrossing story that keeps the reader engaged throughout. I don't care for the vernacular conversations of her characters, however. Especially in the current social climate, it makes me uncomfortable and seems a little unnecessary.

As a librarian, I would confidently recommend this to adult readers who are interested in Civil War era historical fiction. I found this to be a great, fast read - I couldn't wait to get back to it during breaks and after work and it has encouraged me to research more about this great woman.
