Most people have heard of Harriet Tubman, but they may not have learned much about her. It’s well known about her work with the Underground Railroad, but her work as a scout for the Union Army may be a lesser known fact. While this is a work of fiction, it is based on facts and the struggles and prejudices Harriet faced. It’s apparent that Harriet was a strong, independent woman who was determined to do what was right.

Each chapter begins with a quote (from slaves, volunteers, military members, etc.) that adds authenticity to the story. Things drag a bit at times due to some over-detailing. That, along with the dialect frequently used in the book caused me to not get as invested in the story as I would have liked. This is a difficult, yet informative, read. If you enjoy historical fiction, particularly the Civil War era, you may want to add this one to your TBR pile.
