I, like most people, was aware of Harriet Tubman as an important personage connected to the Underground Railroad in the Civil War era. Beyond those facts, I really did not know any of her story until reading this novel, The Tubman Command, by Elizabeth Cobbs. Written in historical novel form the story of this tiny unlikely hero comes pretty much breathtakingly alive.

It would be amazing enough if a small, illiterate, and somewhat handicapped from injuries woman managed to escape from slavery but to put herself in danger of being caught and returned to those circumstances time and time again in order to free family and stranger alike makes her worthy of her revered place in history. The book tells her story in a compelling narrative.
